2021

Competition Winners

Congratulations to all our winners and runners up in the 2021 short story and poetry competition on the theme: This is Me - Hear My Voice.

Thank you to everyone who submitted a piece.

My Voice

Winner, 5-7 poetry category, Swara Rao

Please can you hear my voice,

But you don’t have a choice.

Flowers on trees,

and fluttering bees.

Can you agree with me?

These are beautiful to see.

Let us plant more trees

So that we breathe with ease.

Protect the animals,

do not kill these.

All Ears

Winner, 8-11 poetry category, Nyah-Walcott Quansah

All ears! Take notice of what I say,

Because right now, right here today,

Is time for me to explain

The main purpose for you listening.

The message I tell is not that plain,

Yet powerful but may sound insane.

I have a voice and want to say,

Standing here on this stage,

Speaking out loud while feeling proud

Has helped me accomplish things,

Leading up to this day.

You may think what am I proud of?

Well… My skin colour,

Dark brown electrified by the sun,

Makes me feel powerful,

Ready to take on anyone!

My Afro, bouncy and puffy,

Curly and fluffy.

Is my perfect crown to receive

All the floating energy and elements,

My knowledge and intelligence,

Are growing every day,

Still more things to learn

But I'm on my way!

My ancestors have left me

Things to explore,

With this legacy I will open up

Some new doors!

I am a voice, knowing myself

And doing the RIGHT thing is the RIGHT choice.

If all ears listened to

What this 10-year-old has to say,

The world would be a different place.

So tell me

Winner, 15-17 poetry category, Ivy Oppong

So tell me

So tell me,

Why are you always running and why don’t you just stop?

Why do you always focus on the minutes and not the meaning of the clock?

Why do you only ever hear tick-tock?

Have the hours that we live become our chains and our locks?

So tell me,

Are you using your days or losing your days?

Why are you going one direction, and your time runs the other way?

Is neglecting your time now a new game?

It seem like wasting time is something all what to play.

So tell me,

Do you use your time wisely, if not, this is your sign

Because your time is being timed and there is not enough time,

Stop thinking, more actions, because that is not a crime,

Because before you know it, you’ll be out of time.

The Flowers Are Blooming

Runner up, 5-7 poetry category, Arthur Ledwidge

The flowers are blooming

I am happy

I'm colouring in my book and eating cookies

The River Thames is choppy

Mummy tells me she is proud

The sun sets

Perfect Memories

Runner up, 8-11 poetry category, Nina Krchnavek

Laughing eating sweets

Playing around climbing trees

Why oh why did these memories

Have to sink away into another day

Why oh why

I say

Running through the grass and flowers

Turning minutes into hours

Shame it only lasts one day

It would be longer if I had my way

Choosing our destination

Ready for our one day vacation

Don’t know where we’re gonna stay

It doesn’t matter anyway

Wishing it could last

Not stay in the past

A perfect day

That has run away

I don’t believe it’s true

It makes me feel so blue

To say goodbye it makes me wanna cry

Running through the grass and flowers

Turning minutes into hours

Shame it only lasts one day

It would be longer if I had my way

Choosing our destination

Ready for our one day vacation

Don’t know where we’re gonna stay

It doesn’t matter anyway
